Pannala track to produce top racing fare on Sunday

The second stage of the McFoil Motor Racing Championship is scheduled to be held at Pannala Formula III International Circuit commencing at 9.30 a.m. The Event sponsored by McFoil Ltd. is conducted by Ceylon Motor Sports Club and Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club. Practices will be held today (Saturday).

Around 75 cars of various categories and 30 motor cycles have already listed for the day's event which is expected to thrill the fans who gather in large numbers to witness the thrills and spills of the sport. The championship events will be hotly contested on this in group A cars (Standard Minis) and cars 12 kg and up to 14 kg category. The other championship event the Formula 1600 cc too will thrill the spectators to their maximum when nine top notch formula drivers battle for supremacy.

Here the top contenders are de Silva's Romani and Rohan, Rizvi Farouk, Simon Laurenz, Dinesh Jayawardene, M. R. Muthumani and young Dejan de Zoysa who is ready to pose a threat to seniors. In the event for Minis Rohith de Silva will face stiff opposition from A. A. Keerthi, K. Balasingham, A. D. Gunewardena and Buddhika de Silva. The spectators could expect a fine race in this event.

Army man Ravi Mayadunne driving his Mazda Mobil 323 is sure to chased by experienced drivers Dhammika Pieris (Ford Laser) and Dilshard Hamdoon, behind the wheel of Ford Laser Caltex. Sheran Fernando driving his Citroen Saxo could pose a big threat driver of the calibre of Zakie Ismail, Ishak Wahab and Siddi Farouk in the 8-10 kg class of Group A. Shera also will drive Suzuki Baleno in the 10-12 kg class facing opposition Sumanapla Mannapperuma, Dinesh Jayawardene, Dhammika Pieris and Nihal Premasiri all driving Honda Civics.

Dilantha Mahagamuwa will drive his Suzuki Pride Turbo along with Prasanna Pieris and Harsha de Silva.

Meanwhile the open event for cars over 1665 cc will see for the first time the latest model of the Mitsubishi Evolution VIII sponsored by United Motors and driven by Dinesh Deheragoda.

Evolution VIII which was launched few months ago in Thailand will be the most high powered vehicle to enter the racing tracks of the island. Dinesh who won the championship last year driving a Evo VII RS is sure bring the best for his sponsors United Motors the agents for Mitsubishi vehicles in Sri Lanka. Mitsubishi has won a high respect for its performance off road around the world.

Dinesh will have opposition coming from two drivers behind the wheels of evolution Riyaz Farouk and Don Dissanayake Evo 4. Others competing in this event are Nalin D. Perera. Impressa and Romani de Silva Nissan Pulsar.
