Program to prevent contagious diseases after flood - Health official

Immediate steps should be taken to implement a progamme to prevent contagious diseases in the Kalutara district with the receding of flooded water. All the wells filled with contaminated water should be cleaned, said Dr. Sarath Abeysinghe, Director of Health Services, Kalutara at a conference held at the Kalutara Secretariat.

Minister of Labour and Employment Mahinda Samarasinghe presided. Ministers and the Members of the parliament of Kalutara district participated at the special conference.

Mrs. Yasmin Siriwardhana, District Secretary Kalutara said that she had already requested the President Task Force to send 140 water pumps to each divisional Secretariat division to clean the polluted water in wells, specially in village areas.

She has also requested the social organisations and philanthropists to assist the flood victims as the rehabilitation work has to be carried out for several months. S. Happuthanthri, Additional G.A. Kalutara said, ten water pumps had been received and they will be used to clean the polluted wells in rural areas.

People have been advised to consume the boiled water to prevent the outbreak of bowel-diseases. Bimal Prasad Achary (U.N.D.P) India who visited had conferred with the Additional GA Kalutara regarding the urgent necessities to be despatched immediately from the government of India for flood victims.
