On April 24th - World YWCA Day, YWCA women from over 100 countries gathered for a special celebration of women's leadership with a "Breakfast Around the World". The celebration started at 7 a.m. in Wellington, New Zealand and finished 21 hours later in California, USA and British Columbia, Canada state. States a YWCA press release. The breakfast in Sri Lanka was from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. on April 24th at the National YWCA Headquarters, No 7, Rotunda Gardens, Colombo 3. At this same time women in India, Nepal and Bangladesh were connected with the women in Sri Lanka in the Breakfast Around The World. The highlights of the "Breakfast Around the World" was that the entire breakfast depicted the culture of the two main ethnic groups, the Sinhala and Tamil people. The typical Sri Lankan menu included all ethnic foods including the sweetmeats. The traditional decor blended with the occasion. At a time when there is peace in our land, when the government and NGOs are all working towards a lasting peace, the Chief guest's address was also based on Peace. Another important aspect of the breakfast is - it strengthened the links between the YMCA and the YWCA, through a common concern - Peace. The Chief guest was the president of the National Councils of YMCA's Eraj Wijesinghe and Roshan Wijesinghe. The speech of the World General Secretary Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro on the World YWCA Day was read out. This impressed on the audience the mission and vision of the World YWCA and the importance of fellowship and 'oneness' in the Y family. Information on "The Global Campaign" and the breakfast as a fundraiser created much awareness of the commitment of the YWCA to leadership of women and girls. The informal and friendly atmosphere, the tasty food, the coming together of old and an enjoyable morning were the greatest highlights of the day. |
