by Sandasen Marasinghe A 14-year-old school boy was killed when he fell through an elevator shaft well in the Colombo Central Trade Complex in Pettah on Sunday. The tragedy occurred when the boy accidentally stepped into the elevator cage on the second floor of the building where there was no lift .He was seriously injured from the 24 foot drop and succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo National Hospital. According to the evidence the boy had been in the Trade Complex along with five other friends to collect money to prepare meal packets for the Kochchikade annual feast on June 13. The boy was identified as Balakrishnan Dushyanthan of Ginthupitiya Kotahena . He was a grade nine of Vivekananda collage in Colombo. Philip Rex Eliot (14) who was with the victim at the time of the incident said in evidence before City Coroner Edward Ahangama that Balakrishnan said that he desired to go on the lift. Then he opened the door of the lift and stepped in . The lift was not there and he fell in. Ruwan Ranasinghe (33) a security at the Central Colombo Trade Complex stated that he heard some thing heavy falling and when he went there he saw the children. Then he complained to the police. Witness said that workers of the lift do not work on Sunday. City Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death due to head injuries. Dr T. R. Liyanasuriya held the post-mortem. Evidence was led by Pettah Police.
