by Asanga Warnakulasuriya A 10 year old boy proved too smart for a group of kidnappers who seized him on his way to school when the boy made his escape employing a clever dodge, yesterday. The kidnapping took place at around 7.30 a.m. while a Grade 4 student of Gothami Junior school was on his way to school along a lonely stretch of road. Gampaha Police said that the kidnappers who had arrived in a motorcycle had used chloroform to render the boy unconscious. Thereafter the gang had transferred the boy into a van and on their way the boy had suddenly regained consciousness . One of the kidnappers who spotted the boy stir had chloroformed him for the second time but this time the lad pretended to inhale chloroform and feigned unconsciousness. "The kidnappers in the meantime had stopped the van near a boutique for tea. Seizing the opportunity the lad opened the door of the vehicle and made his escape", Gampaha HQI CI Manthriratne said. The boy used the Rs. 10 with him to return home in a Gampaha-Colombo bus. He had related his ordeal to his parents who complained to the Gampaha Police. Gampaha Police OIC Crimes Nimal Wickremanayake is carrying out further investigations under the direction of SSP Lucky Peiris. |
