Doctors prevent Diarrhoea outbreak

Two cases of diarrhoea had been detected from Katuwana in the Hambantota district but the doctors have already controlled the spread of the disease , Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Vijayalakshmi Jagarasasingam said.

She said that Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya and a team of persons including representatives from NBRO, WHO and several other UN agencies and Ministry Secretaries toured the Ratnapura, Matara and Galle districts on Sunday and collected some assessment reports. "Some wells have already been cleaned. We sent about five lorries of dry rations to all flood affected districts and also dispatched some donations sent by Thailand yesterday. We will unload some more donations sent by Malaysia and Oman (for the second time) shortly," she added.

More than 4570 families are being sheltered in 46 camps. Hundred tents and ten water pumps will be sent to the Galle district according to the Secretary.

According to the reports the latest death toll is 235 a further drop from the number estimated since some of those deemed missing had reappeared. The number of missing persons are 19 and all of them from Matara district. The number of affected families is 138,942 and the number of fully damaged houses is 9,503.

About 30,688 houses have been partly damaged. During the meeting on landslides held at the Operations Room at the Prime Minister's office on May 30, Prof.K.Dahanayake, Professor of Geology, University of Peradeniya had pointed out that although 260 possible landslides threats have been reported by the district and divisional authorities, many of them were not serious.

Groups consisting of four members each including professionals and experts on landslides and representatives of National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), Peradeniya and Moratuwa universities, Irrigation Department, CECB, Water Board and Geological Survey and Mining Bureau will be sent to the affected areas.
