Special Strike Force threatened

The Special Strike Force set up to fight hardcore criminals, contract killers and drug traffickers has straightaway caused a flutter among the underworld and local mafia bosses , Director of Crimes Prevention and Public Relations, SSP Rienzie Perera told the Daily News yesterday.

According to the SSP, the Police had already received information that underworld gangsters were seeking out the identity of the special officers tasked with the job and "finish them off" as quickly as possible. Several anonymous telephone calls too were received at the offices of this elite Unit yesterday where the would be officers have been threatened to stop any investigations into the underworld, an officer of the Unit said.

When questioned about the confidentiality of the information, the officer said that every police officer in the Unit has been given strict orders by IGP T.E.Anandaraja and DIG Sirisena Herath to protect the source of the information and any disclosure was prohibited even within the Unit.

The special unit, which operates under direct supervision of IGP and DIG, comprises ten STF officers specialised in VIP protection in addition to 30 top police officers who have excelled in undercover operations.

The Unit is considered as the biggest threat to kingpins of the underworld where it plans to hunt down nearly 30 underworld gangs, rated as the most wanted.
