Carlsberg beer in green bottles

Lion Breweries Ltd re-introduced Carlsberg beer in a Green bottle for the Sri Lankan market from June 1.

The CEO of Lion Breweries Ltd, Suresh Shah, said that they worked closely with Ceylon Glass Company to produce the green bottle locally.

He said that the change of the colour of the bottle would not have any price increase or a quality loss of the product.

Asked what plans they have on the property in Nuwara Eliya Shah said that the lease of the land would remain with the management for a further 66 years. "The government had wanted to acquire our property for a hospital project but the idea seemed to have lost its momentum." He said that if there is a request from the government they would give the property back to the government at any time.

He said that the move by the government to issue licences to retailers to sell only beer would be good for the industry. "It will also reduce the illicit manufacture of liquor. Carlsberg international has a 25% equity stake in Lion Breweries Ltd, a company which has been in Sri Lanka for over 100 years.

Carlsberg was founded in 1847 by the visionary brewer J.C. Jacobsen outside the city ramparts of Copenhagen, Denmark. Betel exporters hail SriLankan flights to Pakistan

The SriLankan airlines' decision to operate three weekly flights to Pakistan from June 1 has been welcomed by local betel exporters who said this decision will provide a great impetus to the local betel industry in the immediate future.

Inverness Mark tops prices at Tea auction

Inverness Mark topped the prices for the tea auctions held on May 21 when it sold a line of Pekoe for Rs. 246 according to Forbes & Walkers. This line of tea was sold by Eastern Brokers Limited.

Ex-Estate offerings at this sale were substantially higher and accounted for 1.7 million kilogrammes. The quality of offerings showed a general decline all-round resulting in a greater weight of plainer quality teas. The combination of the uninteresting quality and larger volume on offer placed downward pressure on prices particularly for teas in the best/below best categories which lost substantially in value on the previous week's levels.

In addition a fair weight of tea remained unsold. Only a few selected invoices of liquoring teas attracted prices above Rs. 200 per kg. Amidst this lower trend, it was heartening to witness the strong demand for the teas at the lower end of the market which sold firm to marginally dearer rates according to the Weekly Report on Sale No. 19 Forbes and Walkers Limited.
