New CNCI Secretary General, CEO

Upali Samarasinghe has been appointed as the new Secretary General Chief Executive of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) from April 1. Samarasinghe, the new CEO is a career Banker who has completed 35 years in the industry working for the Bank of Ceylon, Saudi British Bank, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Sampath Bank. During his tenure of 14 years with Sampath Bank he headed the Finance Division, Operations Division and Planning and Marketing Division of the Bank.

A keen social worker, Samarasinghe is the Current Chairman of the Multiple District Council 306 of Sri Lanka, the Apex Body of the International Association of Lions Clubs and the Immediate Past Governor of Lions Clubs International District 306 B. He is also the Deputy Chairman of the National Hospital Committee Colombo.

Samarasinghe said that the country needs rapid but phased out industrial growth to support the economic revival and the Government should provide concessions wherever possible to encourage the entrepreneur. He said even the banks should consider reduction on lending rates with extended repayment periods depending on the type of industry.

Where ADB, IFC and World Bank Credit Lines are concerned he was of the view that the Central Bank should consider refinance at a lower rate thus providing the leverage for the participating Commercial Banks to extend credit to industrialists on a reasonably rate, preferably single digit rate of interest.

Commenting on his role as the CEO of the Chamber, Samarasinghe said that he would make the Chamber an effective facilitator with regard to difficulties and problems encountered by its members, the frontline industrialist in the country, under the guidance and direction of the Chairman and Management Committee of the CNCI.

He invited local industrialists who have not obtained membership with CNCI to do so early as it would be beneficial for them in numerous ways, being affiliated to the Chamber.
