Opposition parties threaten to form parallel govt KATHMANDU, Tuesday (AFP) Five major political parties who have launched a campaign against King Gyanendra threatened to form a parallel government. They are to ask Taranath Ranabhat, the speaker of the dissolved lower house of parliament, to call a meeting of former MPs to form a parallel government, president of the People's Front-Nepal (PF-N) Amik Sherchan told the Kantipur radio station. "If Ranabhat refuses to comply with the request we ourselves will take initiative towards that direction," Sherchan said. The meeting will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, he said. The PF-N is one of the parties which launched a protest campaign earlier this month to denounce King Gyanendra's October 4 dismissal of elected prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his appointment one week later of a royalist interim government, headed by Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand. The parties, which also include the Nepal Communist Party-United Marxist Leninist, Nepali Congress, the Nepal Peasants and Workers Party and the Nepal Goodwill Party, accuse the king of acting unconstitutionally and want him to "return sovereign and executive rights" to them. |
