Ravibandhu-Samanthi Dance Festival by Prasad Abu Bakr Renowned dancer Ravibandhu Shilpadhipathi together with his wife Samanthi who is also an accomplished dancer has lined up a classic collection to be presented at their annual dance festival starting today at John de Silva Memorial Theatre. Started in 1984, the Ravibandhu-Samanthi Dance ensemble has performed to local and foreign audiences a series of items which are based on traditional dance forms infused with modern methods. We have seen many dance performances by various artistes ranging from maestros Chitrasena and Vajira to various others to date and what dancer Ravbandhu has put together for his present dance festival has been planned as an enhancement to all those performances, blending the traditional with modern, which maestro Chitrasena and other pioneers of traditional dance forms strove to preserve in their original form. Ranging from fusion to contemporary, this year's festival is looked forward to as an eye opener to all dance enthusiasts both professional and amateur,by a set of performers whose presentations have been praised internationally. The programme starts today with "Theveni Vyasanaya", consisting of dance drama and modern miniatures followed by "Nathara" performed by junior students of the institute on the 25th, "Bheri Nadha" a music and drum recital on the 26th will lead on to "Thunvenna" which consists of oriental ballet and modern dance miniatures the next day. The festival will wrap up with an exciting performance on the 28th with "Thrushna" which consists of a range in oriental and traditional dance forms. All performances start at 7.00 p.m. daily. |
