CINEC installs Ship's bridge Manoeuvring simulator

The latest version of a Ship's Bridge Manoeuvring Simulators and an Engine Room Simulator has been installed at the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College formally known as the "CINEC Maritime Campus" at the IT Park, Malabe.

According to Capt. Aldric Pieterz a lecturer at the institution, the Ship's Manoeuvring Simulator (SMS) is one of the latest and most sophisticated pieces of training equipment in the campus. "With these additions the campus is now rated amongst one of the best Maritime Training Facilities in Asia," he said.

"The use of Simulators in Maritime Education and Training has long been recognised as essential to enhance the competency of ship officers. This was the reason the CINEC invested in its modern Simulator Center encompassing the latest technological advancements of Ships, Bridges and Marine Engine Rooms," he said.

"The equipment meets regulations laid Internationally (IMO /STCW) and is extensively used for the purpose of enhancing the competency of senior navigating officers in ship handling as well as watch keeping for junior navigating officers. It is also used for training Port Pilots and Tug Operators."

"The Simulator is also used for customer specified training, research and development of ports and harbours and can be used to conduct trial manoeuvres of vessels for performance evaluation," said Pieterz .

He said that in addition to this simulator an Engine Room Simulator combined with the Engine Control Room, Electrical System and Auxiliary Machinery too is been made available for training.

The Campus which is also the first educational organisation in Sri Lanka and the first Maritime Training facility in South Asia to be accredited to ISO 9001 Quality Assurance standards by the Lloyds of UK is now hoping to attract foreign students, to attend their courses.

He said that already students from the Maldives and Poland have undergone courses. "The management is now targeting students from India, Pakistan, Iran, and Bangladesh to attend future courses."

The campus is also the first and only education center to receive the prestigious National Quality Award for Excellence.

It is also accredited to ISO 14001 Environmental Standards and the Ceyline Group of Companies manages it.
