Policemen of all grades in the Police Department have donated a day's pay towards a fund to provide relief to victims of the devastating floods and landslides which occurred in several parts of the country, states a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior and Christian Affairs. A sum of Rs. ten million being the contribution from the Police Department personnel was handed over to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees on May 22 by the Minister of Interior and Christian Affairs John Amaratunge on behalf of the Police. Also present on the occasion were the Inspector General of Police T. E. Anandarajah and Secretary of the Ministry M. N. Junaid. Minister John Amaratunge also donated his salary for the month of May for the disaster relief fund. Meanwhile, the employees of the Ministry of Interior and Christian Affairs too have decided to donate a day's pay and dry food items and clothing to the flood victims. According to official sources the donation of a day's pay by all Police personnel is in addition to the assistance they have rendered physically - at times risking their own lives - in saving lives of thousands of flood victims by evacuating them to safe places and providing material like food and temporary shelter in their own areas. The efforts of the heroic deeds of the policemen have been appreciated by several community organisations. |
