Regional Cooperation and Tourism

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) and SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) in cooperation with Fredrich Naumann Stiftung (FNst) have organised a seminar, to explore the aspect of Tourism in South Asia on "Regional Cooperation and Tourism" at the Jaic Hilton on May 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The main resource person at this seminar will be Dr. Wolf Dieter Zumpfort, Head of the Political office TUI AG in Berlin and Brussels and Vice President of FNst Dr. Zumpfort, who is an expert in the field of Tourism and International Trade will make a presentation on the main theme of the seminar, "Regional Cooperation and Tourism", a relevant theme for the South Asian region.

Presentations will also be made by Renton de Alwis, Consultant, on "Promoting South Asian Tourism - Opportunities and Challenges and Dr. P. Ramanujam, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, on "Policy Hurdles and Constraints on Promotion of Regional Tourism. The Chairman of the Ceylon Tourist Board, Paddy Withana, will make a presentation on "Regional Tourism Promotion initiatives" - A Sri Lankan Perspective and a presentation on the "Role of MICE Tourism in Regional Tourism" will be made by the General Manager of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, S. S. Gopinath.

Turnover increases, large parcel of JKH changes hands

The Colombo Bourse recorded a turnover of Rs. 487 million buoyed by a large parcel of JKH shares changing hands. Stockbrokers said that 4.76 million shares of JKH were sold.

It was reported that business tycoon Harry Jayawardene sold his JKH shares which consisted of a majority of yesterday's parcel and a foreign investor has picked the lot. However, the Bourse indices decreased with the ASPI falling to 845.3 points from 848.1 and the Milanka index to 1,490.6 points from 1,491.9.

Among the other major transactions were Asian Hotels, Ceylon Tobacco, Distilleries and Nations Trust. The top gainers included Asian Alliance, Colombo Land, Millers, Mullers and C.W.Mackie and Co.

Central Bank Governor to address exporters' seminar

The challenges facing exporters are manifold and companies in order to cope will have to consciously address issues with knowledge and resourcefulness.

The Exporters Association of Sri Lanka has identified these challenges for discussion at a seminar to be held on May 26 at the Auditorium of the Chamber of Commerce. The seminar titled "Exporting in the Midst of Global Turmoil" should attract exporters of all products, whether big or small. They will benefit from the presentations by eminent speakers on issues of finance, marketing, quality and productivity and on human relations.

Senior Directors as well as their functional executives will benefit from the presentations by Mangala Boyagoda, Deepal Sooriyaaratchi, Sunil Wijesinghe and Dr. Uditha Liyanage - experts in their respective fields.

The presentations are expected to highlight little known areas of enhancing export competitiveness.

The keynote speaker introducing the theme of the seminar would be the Governor of the Central Bank A. S. Jayawardena.

US unveils new $20 note

Earlier this month, US government officials unveiled a new $20 note design with enhanced security features and subtle background colours.

The new design is part of an ongoing effort to stay ahead of the counterfeiting of US currency.

NSB Savings scheme to help elders

The National Savings Bank's (NSB) latest savings scheme "Gaurawa" Senior Citizens Benevolent Scheme has been introduced to fulfil the social obligation the NSB has towards elders said E. Narangoda, General Manager of the NSB at a launch held recently at Hotel Taj Samudra. The new savings scheme "Gaurawa" targeted mainly at elders above 60 years is a fixed deposit account paying a monthly interest and the interest rate will always be 1.5% per annum a higher interest rate when compared to the interest rate earned by normal fixed deposits.

The "Gaurawa" account can be opened individually or jointly for persons over 60 years. The minimum deposit to open an account is Rs 5000. The option of joining an insurance scheme, facility to obtain loans with a lower interest rate and issue of a membership card for priority treatment are some of the benefits of the "Gaurawa" savings scheme. Industrial Forum for SMIs

Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama will preside over an industrial forum conducted for small and medium scale industrialists (SMTs) in a bid to promote industrialisation in the provinces.

The forum sponsored by the Ministry of Industries will be held today at 10.00 a.m. at the Kegalle Municipal Council.

Participants will include Minister of Industries, Rohitha Bogollagama, Minister of Samurdhi, R. A. D. Sirisena, Kabeer Hassim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Training, Jayatilleke Podinilame, Minister of North West Region Development, Members of the Regional Council and Pradeshiya Sabhas.
