The CINTEC Internet Committee announced the availability of new second level domains, under the dot lk domain.

A domain name is an alphanumeric string that locates an organisation or other entity on the Internet. For example, the domain name www.cintec.lk locates an Internet address for "www.cintec.lk" at IP (Internet Protocol) address 203.94.74.4.

A Top Level Domain name is either a generic top-level domain (gTLD), - such as .int for international organisations, .edu for educational organizations, .biz for established business - or a country code top-level domain (ccTLD), such as .lk for Sri Lanka or .jp for Japan, which are the 2-letter codes for countries according to the standard ISO 3166-1.

There is a national organization in charge of domain registrations in every country. In Spain for example the organisation is ES-NIC, and in Sri Lanka registrations are carried out by the LKNIC (Sri Lanka Domain Registry - www.nic.lk) which is under the preview of the CINTEC Internet Committee.

Second level domains describe the nature of the entity owing the domain name (e.g.,gov.lk for government organizations, com.lk for commercial organisations, and sch.lk for schools). This allows greater flexibility and extends the number of possible combinations of registered domain names.

Under the Sri Lanka domain registry, LKNIC, second level domain names are classified under open and closed second level domains.

* Closed second level domains are available for special categories of organisations as follows: * .gov.lk For Sri Lankan government organizations, * .sch.lk For schools registered under the Ministry of Education, * .net.lk For licensed Internet Service Providers in Sri Lanka, * .int.lk for international treaty organisations.

* Open second level domains are available for any organisation, but are recommended to be used as follows: * .com.lk to be opened as a second level domain, * .org.lk for organisations registered in Sri Lanka, * .edu.lk for educational sites, * .ngo.lk for non-governmental organizations, * .soc.lk for societies registered in Sri Lanka, * .web.lk for web sites, * .ltd.lk for limited liability companies, * .assn.lk for associations, * .grp.lk for groups of companies, * .hotel.lk for hotels.

Direct requests for registering open second level domains, are not accepted by the Sri Lanka domain registry. Registration of open second level domains are handled by Domain Name Registration Agents, who are the only entities that entertain the registration of open second level domains under the .lk ccTLD. The list of Domain Registration Agents that are activated are now available on the www.nic.lk
