Peterites out to retain Milo League title

by Chris Dhambarage

St. Peter's College with seven senior players in their ranks are determined to retain the Milo 'A' division league title for the second successive year.

Last week they opened the new inter school rugby season with a convincing 29 points to 5 win over Carey College in a friendly encounter on their home grounds at Bambalapitiya. The match certainly served as a good warm up session for the Peterites who will face some of the tough opponents during the next couple of weeks.

Last year St. Peter's College led by Sri Lanka youth cap Dilanka Wijesekera enjoyed one of the better seasons winning the important Milo 'A' division league title and also emerging runners up at the Singer Sri Lanka seven a side tournament organised by the Kandy Sports Club and worked at the Bogambara Stadium. They failed to make an impact in the Milo President's Trophy knock out tournament but still their overall performances were really outstanding.

This time of course they are up against the top seven teams in the Milo League and the pressure will be mounting on them before every outing. They will take on Nalanda in another friendly encounter on May 26 at Bambalapitiya before getting into real business with an important clash against Trinity College on June 4 at Longden Place. This fixture is quite a significant one for the Peterites even though the Trinitians are competing in the Milo League division two tournament. Their first tournament match will be against Royal which is scheduled for June 15 at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds, Reid Avenue.

This game too has great importance for the Peterites because they have not beaten Royal for 13 years. The last time they beat Royal was in the year 1990 under the captaincy of Harendra Wijesena and last year they went down to Royal by 24 points to 12. St. Peter's will be up against Dharmaraja College Kandy in another Milo 'A' division league tournament fixture on June 27 at Bambalapitiya. The Peterites will then face their moment of truth when they confront Isipatana on July 12 at Havelock Park in what should turn out to be a deciding game.

The Peterites will travel upto Kandy for the first time in the current season for their game against St. Anthony's College on July 19. Their last match will be against the traditional rivals St. Joseph's College on July 26 in Colombo for the Rev. Fr. Basil Wiratunge Shield. This game is of course considered as a friendly encounter because the Josephians are competing in the Milo 'B' division league tournament.

The Peterites are led by centre three quarter Rumesh Ishak and the side is studded with six other senior coloursmen namely vice captain Dananjaya Nonis, flanker Sajith Adhikara, second row forward Menik Hewagama, flanker Malith Perera, scrum half Mahesh Fernando and wing three quarter Mohamed Renaz.
