Kasthuriratne on course for Lectra Grand Prix title

by Kandy Sports Correspondent

Veteran golfer Sirath Kasthuriratne with 421 points leads the Lectra Monthly Medal Golf competition organised by the Victoria Golf Club and sponsored by Apparel Technologies (Pvt.) Limited and Lectra France Limited and worked off at the picturesque Victoria Golf Course every month. The Grand Prix of this competition has been fixed for the end of this month.

Already 11 rounds of this monthly competition has been worked off and Si Kasturiratne has accumulated 426 points but is being followed by former cricketer Nimal Wettimuni with 320 points. At one stage Si Kasthuriratne had 416 points and appeared to be a comfortable winner as the second placed Priyantha Kumara had 279 points and Nimal Wettimuni had only 232 points, and was placed fifth behind K. Hama (271 points) and Peter Bright (253 points). Excellent performances in the next two rounds in which Wettimuni accumulated 88 points enabled him to displace Priyantha Bright and K. Hama in the race for the coveted title.

Kumara showed an early flourish when he recorded two successive monthly wins and from nowhere he rose to the second spot providing a major threat to the leader Kasthuriratne but indifferent form in the next two rounds saw him drop points and now only has an outside chance of grabbing the Grand Prix. title.

Japanese T. Okada too has done exceptionally well in the last two rounds to push himself from the seventh place to the fifth slot last month. But as it appears now, the battle for the top honours will be between Kasthuriratne and Wettimuni with the former enjoying a good lead but the latter is capable of an upset if his present form continues.

This Lectra Month Medal Golf competition organised by the Victoria Golf Club has provided the connoisseurs with some excellent golf on brilliantly laid fairways by the Club Manager Tony Witham and the Secretary British born Janine Weeratunga now domiciled in Sri Lanka and the Marketing Manager Laindra Ranaweera has not only played the role of good hosts but also have handled the competition well to make it enjoyable for the participants who make their monthly pilgrimage to the Victoria Golf course and to make it worthwhile.

The points standing at the end of the penultimate round is as follows.

2. Nimal Wettimuni        320 points.

3. Priyantha Kumara      297 points.
