Lake House sends sugar, rice for Kalutara flood victims

At the request of Mass Communication Minister Imthiasz Bakeer Markar, Lake House has taken steps to despatch about 5000 kilograms of sugar and 100 bags of rice to the Kalutara Kachcheri immediately to be distributed among the flood victims in several affected areas. Lake House is also making arrangements to collect from its employees various relief aid such as dry rations and clothings to be distributed among the people rendered homeless due to earth slips and flood conditions in the island, states Lake House Working Director D.K.Somasiri. 

New Chairperson for Atomic Energy Authority

Minister for Economic Reform, Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda has appointed prof. Rohini Hewamanna of University of Colombo, as the Chairperson of the Atomic Energy Authority of Sri Lanka. She succeeds Prof. M. Prinath Dias, who resigned from this post recently to accept a position at the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Prof. Hewamanna is the Head of the Department of Nuclear Science of University of Colombo and has been a Member of the Board of Management of the Atomic Energy Authority since 1995. She has made a significant contribution to the development of the Atomic Energy Authority, as a Member of the Board.

Prof. Hewamanna holds Doctoral and Masters degrees in Radiobiology from University of London and a B.Sc (Hons) degree from the University of Colombo.

Prof. Hewamanna counts 27 years of experience as an academic, having joined the academic staff of University of Colombo in 1976. She is the wife of Attorney-at-Law Suranjith Hewamanna.

Scouts to collect flood relief

The Sri Lanka Scout Association and the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association are jointly organising the collection and distribution of clothes and school needs to victims of flood affected areas in Ratnapura and Kalutara districts.

The organisers appeal to the public to contribute generously towards this undertaking.

The Scouts and Girl Guides in uniform will visit the homes in the Western and Central provinces. The donors are kindly requested to refrain from making cash donations. Donations are restricted to items of clothing, exercise books, pens, pencils etc., says a press release of the Sri Lanka Scout Association.

Help save her life

A.D. Umesha, a 4 year old of 8/1 Eksath Mawatha, Mahara, Kadawatha is suffering from Acture Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Dr. Jayantha Balawardane M.D., Consultant Oncologist at the Cancer Institute, Maharagama under whose care Baby Umesha is, has strongly adviced that she be taken to a centre of excellence in India for highly specialized treatment.

The cost of her treatment only will be approximately Rs. 500,000. They need a further sum to cover their air fares to India and back, as well as their food whilst in India.

Baby Umesha's father Mr. Dileep is in no position financially to be able to pay for this life-saving treatment, and appeals to philanthropists and well wishers to contribute in whatever way possible, and help save this precious baby's life. All contributions should be remitted to the People's Bank Savings Account No: 26393 opened in the name of Baby Umesha's mother Mrs. Kerawala Vithanage Shiromi, at the Mahara 217 Branch.
