Minister directs providing relief to flood victims

by Ananda Kannangara

At least 10,000 flood victim families in the Kalutara District were yesterday provided with all relief assistance by the Divisional Secretaries and several social service organisations on the directive of Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.

At an emergency meeting held at Kalutara District Secretariat on Sunday night it was revealed that families at Bingiriya, Madurawela, Palindanuwara, Bulathsinghala, Walallawita and Dodangoda in the Kalutara District were severely affected by the floods and nearly 610 houses were damaged.

During the meeting Minister Samarasinghe instructed the officials to use about 18 boats to rescue flood victims and also to protect the personal belongings of the people.

Samarasinghe also directed the officials to take immediate measures to distribute bread, rice, milk powder and other essential dry rations and also clothing materials to victims.

The Minister requested several organisations to cancel musical shows and other cultural programmes which are to be held at Kalutara area to coincide with the Vesak festival and utilise the allocated money for the welfare of flood victims.

The Minister also called a fresh meeting on May 22 to see the progress of the welfare programme already launched and also the success of the food distribution programme.
