President's Fund releases Rs. 100 million for house repair

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, having inquired after the latest developments about the flood disaster conditions from the Special Presidential Surveillance Committees has pledged of Rs. 100 million rupees to repair houses devastated by the floods.

President Kumaratunga, explaining the measures expected of the Human Disaster Management Committee under her command has instructed the Governors to set up Presidential Surveillance Committees in all flood affected provinces comprising District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, Social Services Ministry officials, Regional DIGs, Army Officers and Parliamentarians of affected areas under the leadership of the Chief Minister concerned.They were directed to convene meetings immediately to coordinate relief measures. Four senior officers from the Presidential Secretariat have been appointed to streamline affairs pertaining to rehabilitation work.

President Kumaratunga also personally contacted the relevant Chief Ministers and District Secretaries to instruct them as to how the flood victims should be redressed with regard to their resettlement, provision of dry ration and temporary lodging facilities.

She pledged financial assistance from the Presidential Fund for the purpose of repairs to the damaged houses and informed the local officials that action will be taken to find aid from Government and local government sources to restore road reconstruction and other damaged infrastructure facilities.

According to Presidential Special Surveillance Unit sources appointed for the purpose, food and commodity supplies as flood relief are flowing regularly from Government, Local Government and private individuals and voluntary organisations, but clothing remains as one of the basic needs in short supply at the moment.
