Train services to the flood-affected areas will continue according to the normal timetable, the Railways Department assured yesterday. A spokesman for the Railways main control room told the Daily News that the turbulent weather persisting in several districts in the country will not affect the train service in a significant way. "Apart from two or three delays during the past few days, the floods and earth slips in Matara, Galle and Kalutara districts did not affect the punctual operation of trains," he said. Several trains in the Puttalam line have got late yesterday owing to heavy rains in areas like Negombo. All mail trains and certain morning trains in the central line also recorded delays yesterday as some rail tracks in the hill country had been obstructed by fallen trees. However, yesterday's problem in the coastal line which caused 15-20 minutes delay in the morning office trains was not a result of the flood but a technical one, he said. The Department has launched several programmes to prevent heavy rains from obstructing the operation of trains to the flood-affected Southern and Central areas. Measures have also been taken to implement pilot systems to keep flood water away from railway lines. |
