Maharagama special correspondent Nature is life. Lord Buddha, the greatest environmentalist preached the importance of the environment, said Environmental Officer, Homagama Mrs. Anoma Nilanthie at a seminar held at Mattegoda Vidyadeepa Maha Vidyalaya to mark the Vesak Week programme. Principal Hemachandra Balasuriya chaired the seminar. Nilanthie said: "Even according to the precepts of Buddhism one should refrain from killing. This includes animals and the environment. Lord Buddha had set an example by being born, attaining enlightenment and passing away under a tree. "The Buddha paid homage to the Bo-tree which helped and sheltered Him attain enlightenment. Tree planting, constructing tanks, wells and roads to be used by others are shown as a good deeds even in the 'Maha Mangala Sutta'. "Every good Buddhist must be a nature-lover," she said. At the end of the seminar, 50 medicinal herbs were planted at the school premises by the members of the Environmental Preservation Committee. |
