by Manjula Fernando The Indian Naval ship, Sharda dispatched to assist the Sri Lankan Government in rescue operations and flood relief distribution arrived at the Galle Port yesterday. The vessel equipped with a search and rescue helicopter, nine inflatable craft, an eight member specialised medical team and a large reserve of food stocks was sent in response to the request made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Sunday. India was the first country to respond to the appeal to the international community by the PM to help rescue flood victims and distribute food and water to civilians in areas affected by the worst floods the country experienced in five decades. The ship sailed out from Cochin at 10.45 pm on Sunday. The vessel carries on board 33 skilled divers and a food stock of rice, tea, sugar, dhal, mineral water, biscuit and frozen food like butter, fish and meat. The ship will be assisting Government relief operations in Matara and Hambantota. |
