Companies need to add more value to products, services - CIMA president

by Sarath Malalasekera

The CIMA Sri Lanka Division's 25th National Conference will be held on May 29 and 30, on the theme "Re-positioning Sri Lanka Globally". The ceremonial inauguration will be held at the BMICH on May 29 evening under the patronage of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

The keynote address will be delivered by BOI Chairman/Director General Arjunna Mahendran.

The technical sessions comprising four papers and discussion sessions will be held on May 30 at the Colombo Plaza.

The inauguration will be attended by over 800 members, invitees of the Institute and council members. CIMA Elect President Claire Ighodaro, will also attend the event. About 400 members and corporate leaders are expected to attend the technical sessions, said CIMA Sri Lanka Division President Sudarshan Senaratne at a press briefing at the Taj Samudra Hotel recently.

"Most of our exports are highly labour intensive and commodity-oriented, with every little value addition. Even our major exports, tea and garments, account for about 66% of exports while greater value addition for these products is made outside Sri Lanka. As a result of this low values addition in Sri Lanka we are ever trapped in a low earnings and low wage spiral," the CIMA president said.

The CIMA president said that to get out of this spiral our companies need to add more value to their products and services. To achieve this however, our managers and business leaders need to change their mindset to become more entrepreneurial, adopt the glob's best practices, form alliances with global players and become global companies. This conference plans to address these issues and educate our managers in this process of changing the mindset.

The Technical Committee Chairman said that CIMA is fortunate to have a good blend of highly proficient local and foreign speakers from a broad spectrum of backgrounds and expertise.

This year's conference is expected to rouse great interest as the national economic policies coincide with the theme of our conference and consequently strong representation from both the private and public sector is anticipated. International Marketing, e-Business and Entrepreneurship, Business Specialist Leah H. Zveglich will present a paper on " Visionary Entrepreneurship".

James F. Sparks, Process Engineering Consultant, Thomas Group, Dallas, Texas, USA and Prof. Amoude De Meyer, Deputy Dean, INSEAD, France will also participate.
