Six injured in fresh clashes in western India AHMEDABAD, India, Friday (AFP) Six people were injured Thursday as Hindus and Muslims clashed during processions marking the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed in the western Indian state of Gujarat, officials said. K. Nityanandam, state home secretary, said the clashes came after crackers were burst outside a Hindu temple in Sandhan village in the Kheda district, 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of Ahmedabad, Gujarat's commercial capital. "There was heavy stone-pelting in the area and several shops, stalls and vehicles were burnt by the raging mob," a police official said. Police opened fire and used teargas to control the unruly crowds. It was not immediately known whether the wounded were injured in the clashes or the police action. Nityanandam said the situation was now under control. On Saturday similar violence broke out after a game of cricket between children, leaving one person dead. |
