CR have the edge over Air Force

CR and FC which registered two runaway victories over Kandy Youth (86-6) and Old Zahirians (91-8) should notch up their third successive win when they take on Sri Lanka Air Force in their Caltex inter club 'A' division league rugby match at Longden Place today.

The Airmen who came up with a pleasing performance to go down fighting to Police by 26-36 failed to live upto expectations when they were thrashed 10-56 by Army last week and will have to come up with a much better performance if they hope to contain the Red Shirts today.

The three quarters have been the forte of the Red Shirts and they are bound to come up with another fine display of open rugby. The halves combination of Zulki Hamid and Charith Kodagoda have hit it off smoothly while Harin Kaluarachchi, Musafer, Halimdeen and Mushtaq have breached their opponents defence time and again with their powerful runs with full back Asanga Rodrigo joining the line to form the overlap.

Among the forwards Sumedha Jayasinghe, Roshan Perera, Savantha de Saram, Lakmal Abeysuriya, Anuranga Walpola and skipper Shamly Nawaz have stood out with their fiery loose play and a repeat performance should secure enough good ball for their three quarters to make maximum use of to pierce the Airmen's defence. Army v Navy

The high riding Sri Lanka Army will have the tough task of overcoming the Sri Lanka Navy in their match at Welisara today. The soldiers have scored three smashing wins over Kandy Youth (66-13), Old Zahirians (145-0) and Air Force (56-10) but are likely to receive stiff resistance from the gallant sailors who always give of their best when playing at home.

There should be a terrific battle up front with the powerful forwards of Army Jayatilleke, Rajapakse, Jayasuriya, Karunaratne, Samarasinghe and Kenyan Edwin Shimanga being confronted by the dreaded Navy eight with Kaluarachchi, Piyaratne, Malawana, Sheriffdeen, Ruwantilleke and Fernando likely to come out with a sterling display.

The soldiers will strive to work their three quarters at every turn having an experienced halves combination of Naufer Rahim and Ajith Peiris while Kapila Knowlton, Vajira Jayatilleke, Nalin Vijitha and Mohamed Naushad being hard runners who are capable of penetrating the Navy defence.
