Aid will help govt. eradicate poverty, unemployment - Minister

The Government is expected to receive Rs. 100 thousand million as assistance from the Japan Aid Conference to be held next month. If we invest this aid on development projects, we will be able to eradicate poverty and reduce unemployment.

The opposition through vengeance is trying to sabotage the various development projects of the government, said Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku at a ceremony held at Susilarama Temple, Malabe, Kaduwela.

The ceremony was held to provide assistance under the decentralised budget of Prof. G. L. Peiris for community development work in the Kaduwela electorate.

Prof. G. L. Peiris, Minister, Kaduwela Divisional Secretary S. S. G. Sakalasooriya and Member of the Western Provincial Council, Nimal Ratugama participated on this occasion. This assistance covers a range of activities such as the renovation of work of the Vihara Mandiraya, Malasinhagoda Buddhist Centre, the distribution of dry rations to low income families, educational appliances to the Susilarama Dhamma School, the presentation of magi boards to Montessori schools to develop the area. Minister Kodithuwakku said that the people have given us a mandate as they have placed their trust in us.

Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion Prof. G. L. Peiris said the crime rate is deplorable. We witness the most brutal crimes in the last few days. Some are asking to introduce capital punishment. This is a simple solution to the problem, but not a lasting solution. This is a problem that has a depth. We have to analyse it deeply. We have to find a lasting solution by strengthening the temple and the Dhamma schools and improve the religious education among our children. We have to have a renaissance in our social values. Our education is imbalanced. We have reliance on science and technology.

He said competition in society is the major factor for the present social set up. The technology of our times is so superior in the present world we live in. It is necessary to have a knowledge of English to obtain any kind of employment. Present day society cannot advance forward without the English language. Having realised this situation, we have commenced an intensive training classes in English and computer education through the Foundation.

Our Foundation is undertaking this work with the co-operation of the political authority of the respective areas. We thank Ven. Dr. Poravagama Wimalaratne Thera who gave us full co-operation and Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Minister of Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs and the Secretary of the Divisional Secretariat.

Ven. Dr. Poravagama Wimalaratne Thera of the Malabe Susilaramaya gave the Anusasana, Co-ordinator of the G. L. Peiris Foundation, Gemunu Puhspakahada made the welcome address. Anuradha Mayadunne, organiser of the Women's Bureau of the G. L. Peiris Foundation presented the vote of thanks.
