Matara central correspondent Not only those who performed well at national and international levels in sports or other matters; but others who have dedicated their services to uplift society; too have been recognised on this occasion by awarding certificates of merit covering all aspects of service - I consider this a welcome move, said the Minister for Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, when he spoke as chief invitee on the occasion of awarding certificates of merits to winners of plays of short duration, staged at the Ruhuna stage drama festival 2003, held recently at Cultural Centre, Nupe, Matara. Minister Kodituwakku further said, 'culture' is a vast subject though many did not know it. With the assistance of all professors in the island, a scheme was launched during the last year to educate schoolchildren on the subject of culture. Within the five hours the schools are in sessions all subjects cannot be covered. Parents, media personnel, journalists and others could lend a helping hand - in this matter. School population at present is 4.5 million. Two hundred thousand of those seven hundred thousand in government service are directly connected to the education of children. They have been entrusted with not only the subject of education of children but also of preserving cultural heritage too. As said in various circles no deterioration of cultural values has happened. Chief Minister Southern Province H. G. Sirisena said, under the concept of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga cultural centres were established islandwide. This centre at Nupe is a gift of a philanthropist. Matara district secretary G. S. Ediriweera, manager of the Ruhunu Cultural Centre Erandana Hemawardhana and several others also spoke. |
