Four die, 44 injured in two accidents

Four persons died and 44 were injured in two separate accidents at Suriyawewa and Habarana, Morawewa .

In the first accident at Suriyawewa on Vesak full-moon day a van carrying pilgrims to Kataragama collided with a lorry transporting passengers at Suriyawewa Highway.Two persons died on the spot and 24 were injured in the accident.

In another accident yesterday (16) two persons died while 20 others were injured when a luxury air-conditioned bus skidded off the road at Kandediya Habarana, Morawewa. OIC Habarana police Inspector Tennakoon said that two of the injured in a critical condition, were rushed to Anuradhapura and Kantale hospitals for treatment. H. Lasihami (70) and her son who drove the ill-fated van, A. W. Tilakaratne (45) died in the accident. Both of them were residents of Nivithigala.

Five of the injured are currently receiving treatment at Matara base hospital while others at Hambantota base hospital.

Hambantota Additional Magistrate Faizal Razine conducted the magisterial inquiry.
