Athula Bandara Senaviratne (30) who suffered a heavy blow on his face dealt by his opponent from the Army during a bout died of intracerebral haemorrhage at the Colombo National Hospital on Wednesday. The victim was a resident of Muruthaluwa, Peradeniya. The boxing tournament was held from May 8 to 11 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Ravindra Sri Lal Kumarapperuma, the coach of the Navy boxing team said testifying before the City Coroner Edward Ahangama. Witness further said that Senaviratne performed well on the first two days. But on the next day (10th) during the second round he suffered a heavy blow on his face dealt by his opponent from the Army. In the third round too he suffered a similar blow and although the final whistle was blown the victim was still on his feet. The boxing coach further stated that the victim later complained of a headache and nausea. Then he was taken to the Navy Hospital and later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The City Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death. Dr. P. Paranitharan held the post-mortem. Evidence was led by Grandpass Police. |
