from Shiromi Abeyasinghe in Chennai The Buddha Poornima Vesak procession organised by the Sri Lanka Mahabodhi Society of Chennai was paraded along the streets of Eggmore City in the evening of May 15, the Vesak Full Moon Day. The procession commenced from the Mahabodhi Centre at Kenneth Road, Chennai at 4.00 pm to progress its way through Gandhi Road, Police Commissioner's Office Road, Panthian Road and River Road covering a distance of four kilo metres. A large Abhaya Mudra Buddha statue was at the forefront of the procession, escorted by a colourful motorcade carrying buddhist flags, followed by long files of devotees carrying banners representing 18 Tamil-Buddhist Organisations in Tamil Nadu. Amid them were the traditional Tamil drummers and instrumentalists who provided music to conventional dancing troupes of Karanatam, Kokilayatam,Podikaal, Kudure, Kawadi, Kohomba, Manipur and Tigar dancing styles. A decorated special float gifted by the proprietor of Nalli Organisation of India carried the casket of Buddha relics. Sri Lankans also contributed to the procession by adding up-country, low-country and Sabaragamuwa dancing troupes accompanied by traditional drummers. Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka State Dancing Troupes participated in the procession. Large crowds thronged the way sides to watch the procession which was a unique experience to the residents of Tamil Nadu. Eggmore Police handled traffic and crowd control. |
