First ever Travel Mart and Exhibition begins today

by Tharika Goonathilake

The country's first ever Travel Mart and Exhibition aimed at marketing 'Destination Sri Lanka', will get underway at the BMICH Exhibition and Convention Centre today. The Travel Mart will provide a platform for over 75 new buyers and sellers to meet and discuss new initiatives to ensure that Sri Lanka's tourism product is sold to key tour operators and travel agents on a global scale.

Travel sector representatives from India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Maldives and Bangladesh including other parts of the world will participate at the Mart cum Exhibition. Part of a mega marketing initiative aimed at boosting Sri Lanka's tourism product, while facilitating efforts to create two/three centre holiday options in the South Asian region with Sri Lanka as the gateway, the Mart and Exhibition, titled 'Destination Sri Lanka-gateway to South Asia', marks a milestone in the country's travel industry.

Buyers representing leisure and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) sectors have been pre selected for the participation at the Mart, that will provide a one-stop-shop for tour operators - conference organisers, hotels, restaurants, incentive houses and airlines to meet and conduct business.

International country pavilions, corporate booths as well as a wide range of tourist products, including gems and jewellery and souvenirs, will go on display at the Mart, which will also host special workshops and industry development sessions with input from international travel experts.

According to Tourism Minister Gamini Lokuge, the event is an ideal opportunity to focus on the country's diverse attractions and set the pace for Sri Lanka to be re-launched as a matchless tourist destination - whether it be for business or leisure travel.
