International cricket ground for Kalutara

"It was a great honour for the people of Kalutara district to allocate one hundred and twenty lakhs of rupees by the Board of Control for Cricket to construct a ground to play Test matches by selecting a suitable land at Dodangoda."

This was stated by Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Labour and Employment at a meeting held at the Auditorium of the Dodangoda Divisional Secretariat Division. The meeting was held to hand over the ownership documents to Susantha Fernando the president of Kalutara Cricket Organisation to construct an International Cricket ground at Dodangoda.

He said, "I took the initiative to persuade responsible persons to obtain an international cricket ground to develop the sports talents of youths of rural areas. The playground will be constructed close to the Express way from Matara to Colombo where the participants of sports could reach Colombo within a short period. The Board of Control for Cricket consented when I pointed out the necessity of an International Cricket ground at Dodangoda."

Anil Kumara Wijesinghe, the Provincial Council Member of WP said, "We should be thankful to the Minister for allocating 1.2 million rupees.

He said that the Board of Control for Cricket has been vested with wider responsibility to improve the playground to bring it to the standard of playing Test matches.

Anura Tennekoon the Director General of Board of Control for Cricket said, "It is a great pleasure to construct an International cricket playground in Kalutara district at Dodangoda, and the proposal was submitted by the Minister of Labour and Employment. Susantha Fernando, the president of Kalutara Cricket Association said with the opening of the new play ground at Dodangoda an opportunity has been given for the youths of Kalutara to develop their talents in cricket.

N. G. Punchihewa, the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Chandana Rodrigo the Divisional Secretary of Dodangoda and Anuradha Godellawatta the Chairman of Dodangoda PS also spoke.
