by Indika Polkotuwa The historical Higher Ordination Ceremony (Upasampada Ulela) of the Malawathu Asgiri Chapters of the Shyamopali Nikaya of the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy was conducted at the Hewisi Mandapaya of the Maligawa on Vesak Full Moon Day (yesterday) to coincide with the 250th Anniversary of introduction of Upasampada in Sri Lanka in the year 1873. Reminiscing the age old traditions, two bikkhus of higher ordination, Ven.Galyale Soratha Thera representing the Malwatta Chapter and Ven.Kevulgama Chandananda Thera representing the Asgiriya Chapter were crowned with "Wahala Naga Crowns" by Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne. After the crowning, the bikkhus were taken on caparisoned tuskers in procession, first around the Maligawa and proceeded to the Malwatta and Asgiriya temples. Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya, Buddhasaasana Minister W.J.M.Lokubandara and Kandy Mayor Kesaralal Senanayake represented the Government while a Thai delegation led by Cultural Affairs Secretary of Thailand and Ambassador for Thailand in Sri Lanka represented the Government of Thailand. Accompanied by the Diyawadana Nilame, they also participated in a religious observance at Thailand Sri Lanka International Buddhist Research Centre at Pallekele, Kandy. |
