Drowning tragedy at Bolgoda Lake

Dr. Sanjaya Ranwella, Panadura Medical Superintendent of Health (38), his wife Dr. Kamani Ranwella (34), their 13 months old son, Helidu Ranwella and Darshan Perera (23), a family friend were drowned at the Bolgoda Lake in the Dick-Ela area on Wednesday when the canoe in which they enjoyed a ride overturned due to heavy weight of seven persons.

In the canoe only three could proceed.

The Wadduwa Inquirer into Sudden Deaths L.N. Kuruppu who held the inquests into the deaths said due to the recklessness and negligent act of them caused their own deaths although they were intellectuals.

Environmental society meeting was held in the bungalow of the Estate of Sihala Urumaya Leader Tilak Karunaratne on Wednesday.

Subsequently on a suggestion of Dr. Ranwella, seven of them proceeded on a canoe. When it went in the midst of the lake accidentally the canoe overturned. Four of them were drowned when all of them fell into the water. Three of them saved their lives. Inspector Lalith Abeysekera, OIC Wadduwa Police rushed to the scene with the assistance of the public, the bodies were recovered.

The inquirer recorded separate verdicts of accidental deaths due to drowning. Negligence and reckless manner of them brought unfortunate ends of their lives, the inquirer said.

Dr. P.O. Perera DMO Gonaduwa Hospital held the post mortem.
