Kamburupitiya group correspondent "If more and more people join the vegetarian movement, a new world order in which a non violent society leading to peace, free from 'Bheeshana' or terror could be established. In this endeavour care should be taken not to hurt the feelings of those others opposed to vegetarianism, but to convince them the deep significance of vegetarianism as against brutality in killing animals for food." So said the Ven. Omare Kasyapa Thera, Secretary, Matara Dist. Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya and Principal, Vidyaniketha Pirivena, Sapugoda, Kamburupitiya who is also the patron of the newly formed Sri Lanka Vegetarian Bhikkhu Organisation (SLVBO). The Ven. Kasyapa Thera speaking from the chair at the inauguration of this new vegetarian bhikkhu organisation held at the YMBA hall in Matara said that the reason why animals, birds or fish were killed was because the people were greedily consuming such meaty food and if they refrained from partaking of it nobody would kill them. Buddhist bhikkhus could insist the 'dayakayas' to serve them only with vegetarian food at almsgivings. The Secretary of the newly formed S. L. Vegetarian Bhikkhu Organisation and Chief Incumbent, Bodhirukkaramaya, Walgama, Matara, the Ven. Wilpita Sudharmalankara Thera said that to be a vegetarian bhikkhu did not mean that such a bhikkhu belonged to a new cult but that he was only following the teachings of the Buddha to the letter by respecting the principle of non violence or 'Ahinsa' to all living beings and there was no stigma by being a vegetarian. Dr. S. P. Kularatne, President, YMBA, Matara said that vegetarianism helps a person to live a long life. |
