Awareness among vehicle owners by Florence Wickramage The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has initiated a series of programmes islandwide to create awareness among vehicle owners to the importance of protecting the air from vehicular emissions and the requirements of the New Vehicular Emission Standards. Official sources told the Daily News that several areas have been covered in lectures under the programme. These include "Productivity Performance, Economic Benefits of the Bus Sector with Vehicle Emission Reduction Programme; Environmental Law and Related Regulation for Vehicle Emission Reduction; Health Effects of Vehicular Emissions; How Can We Reduce the Vehicular Emissions by Proper Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Work; and Programme of Enforcement of Vehicle Emission Standards". The lectures are given by public sector experts who have the hands-on experience in the field. Already these awareness programmes have been conducted in 19 out of 24 districts. Areas covered are Ampara, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Batticaloa, Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya and Polonnaruwa. In the meantime the National Environmental (Air Emission, Fuel and Vehicle Importation Standards) Regulation No. 01 of 2003 will come into effect on the 1st of July 2003 Ministry sources said. |
