Colombo Plan DAP supports 20th IFNGO conference

Dr. U. Sarat Chandran, Secretary General of the Colombo Plan handed over a cheque to Shirley Tissera, President of the Sri Lanka Federation of Non-Government Organisations Against Drug Abuse (Sri Lanka FONGOADA) at ceremony held at the Colombo Plan Secretary on May 13 to fund the 20th International Federation of Non-Government Organisations for the Prevention of Drug and Substance Abuse conference (20 IFNGO conference), which will be held from August 11 to 15 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Tay Bian How, Director of the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (DAP), Dr. Sarath Samarage Hon. Secretary, Iflal Abdulla Treasurer and other Committee Members of the Sri Lanka FONGOADA were also present at the ceremony states a Colombo Plan Secretariat press release.

NGOs can function as catalysts to support the Government's efforts in tackling the drug problem in their respective communities. Since its inception of the IFNGO, the Colombo Plan DAP has been supporting the IFNGO conferences that were held once in two years.

In this year's IFNGO conference with the theme: "Maximising the potential of the youth in drug demand reduction", it is hoped that about 300 participants from all over the world will participate in the conference. Since the conference is organised in conjunction with the "Kandy Perahera', which will be a pre-conference event, it is also hoped that the participants would take this opportunity to visit the tourist sites in Sri Lanka.

The Colombo Plan Drug Advisory programme, which has been in the forefront in efforts to combat the drug menace in the region will sponsor about 100 participants, majority from abroad to this 20th IFNGO conference and will provide a sum of nearly two million Sri Lankan Rupees to Sri Lanka FONGOADA for its local administrative support in the conference.
