Dialog GSM to sponsor CR and FC Runners-up of the Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Tournament last year and reigning Premier Trophy champions Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club will be sponsored by Dialog GSM this year. The President of the club Chula Dharmadasa speaking at a press briefing at the CR and FC pavilion on Friday said that he was grateful to Dr Hans Wijesuriya and his team at Dialog GSM for coming forward to partner CR and FC to keep rugby at a very high level. CR and FC in the past has won many tournaments and produced many stars who have brought honour and fame to the club. In the recent past we had come so close but not enough to reach the pinnacle. "CR and FC this year is being led by third row forward Shamly Nawaz and have a very good team which is a blend of youth and experience and is being coached by evergreen Tony Amith. We have several schoolboy stars of the last two years including four captains Lahiru Boteju (Wesley), Anuranga Walpola, (Isipatana), Zulki Hamid (Royal) and Royal's 2001 captain Harin Kaluarachchi. We also have four past CR captains playing in the team - Champika Nishantha (1999), Savantha de Saram (2000), Kishan Musafer (2001) and Asanga Rodrigo (2002) and with their talent and determination they should bring glory to CR and FC and Dialog GSM. The club has already registered two runaway wins over Kandy Youths (86-6) and Old Zahirians (91-8) The club's rugby budget for the year is almost Rs. 4-5 million. While it covers expenses for the season the club has also allocated funds for the development of junior rugby. We have around 45 boys in the age group 10 to 15 years who are being taught basics of rugby discipline and traditions of CR and FC. The General Manager (Sales and Marketing) of Dialog GSM Nushad Perera said that this was the first time a private rugby club is being sponsored by Dialog GSM. Our firm has close connections with CR and FC and will continue to support the Longden Place Club and hope the club will run up cricket scores as they have already done in the two matches played so far. We will be promoting, encouraging and developing young talent which would help them to improve their skills and gain places in the national team which would help to improve our rugby standard at international level.
