PA extends fullest support to the President

by Uditha Kumarasinghe, Emma Knights and Kiran Bhamber

The People's Alliance yesterday extended its fullest support to the decision taken by the President to take the Development Lotteries Board under her authority, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse said.

He said the PA Executive Committee met yesterday and reached a unilateral decision on the stand taken by the President and also to extend their fullest support to whatever decision that may be taken by the President in future.

PA also condemned the steps taken by the Government to close down the Government Press and accused it for employing thugs who were mainly responsible for the incident at the Government Press.

The PA said certain elements in the Government were attempting to take power into their hands and disrupt the functions of democratic institutions.

Addressing a Press Conference at the Opposition Leader's Office Rajapakse said the President has taken a decision on the Development Lotteries Board and she has all the powers to do so. "If this decision is wrong, the Government can go to courts. Otherwise, the Prime Minister can meet the President to discuss the matter."

He said the Opposition is ready to oppose and respond to any undemocratic move taken by the Government in future. The PA will shortly educate all its party branches and trade unions regarding this issue .

At present the President is consulting her lawyers regarding further action. The President has also taken several important decisions which will be disclosed shortly, he said.

Asked if the President would dissolve Parliament if the present situation worsens, Rajapakse said President has all executive powers to dissolve Parliament at any time. "However, we have not reached such a critical stage to dissolve Parliament. If the President took a decision to dissolve Parliament she will have the full backing of the PA", he said.
