Ship washed ashore

A Maldivian cargo ship anchored in the Panadura sea broke loose and was dragged away to end up on the shores in Murawatte in the Moratuwa area. The Police suspect that heavy winds during the past two days may have ripped the anchor of the ship, bringing it ashore.

The ship with only one crew member on board had received instructions from the Colombo Dockyard to anchor in Panadura waters until it was called for repairs. The Police said that the 100 foot ship was empty at the time of inspection.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or any other loss of cargo according to Moratuwa Police.
