Motor Traffic Dept to expedite issuing licences

by Rajmi Manatunga

The Department of Motor Traffic has decided to expedite issuing driving licences and assess the large number of applications received in the past few years.

It was reported last year that more than 100,000 applications for driving licences received by the Department were awaiting approval due to various discrepancies in the tender procedure for printing the licences.

Commissioner of Motor Traffic, Gamini Senerath told the Daily News yesterday that the Department was able to issue around 30,000 driving licences out of the outstanding applications last month following the Cabinet decision to investigate the alleged inconsistencies in granting the tender to the respective printing agency.

"We decided to take swift action with regard to these applications that have been received a long time ago. The staff will work on Saturdays as well to issue the remaining applications," he said adding that they will be able to finish issuing all outstanding licences within three months.

The Department came under criticism by the public for its delay in issuing driving licences.

"The case is currently pending before the Attorney General and the Cabinet has given a directive to permit the same company to print licences until the case is finalised," Senerath added.

The Commissioner also requested those who urgently require the licences to collect them from the Department.
