Boulder reef sunk to ground level in Telwatta-Pereliya areas

Telwatta group correspondent

The gigantic boulder reef placed in order to prevent sea erosion in 1991 in between sea and the Galle Road in Telwatta-Pereliya areas has sunk down to ground level.

A large number of residents living in between are facing inconveniences annually during off seasons.

Last year several tidal waves were strong enough to encroach over this group of houses and filled these houses with sea water, pushing all their furnitures, pots and other valuable items on to the Galle Road. Because the boulder reef placed behind the houses is insufficient to prevent rough waves.

When the "Daily News" pointed out these facts last year, the Coastal Conservation Department took action to place some boulders along the Galle road only, where there are no houses.

Telwatta is the place where more than thirty large houses were washed away to the sea within a night in 1960.

Part of Galle Road too was completely washed way in that night obstructing all traffic.

Furthermore the coastal authorities took action to place another new boulder line on to the reef placed in 1998 at Seenigama neglecting sunk boulder reef placed in 1990 in Pereliya towards Godagama, Telwatte especially behind 4 group of houses.

These defects were already informed to the Coastal Department by the residents. The residents said that the authorities concerned are taking action to protect Galle only during the rough season.
