'Vahalkada' opening on Vesak day May 15

The newly constructed ornamental arch of entrance (Vahalkada) to Kirivehera will be declared open by Venerable Saddhammakeerthi Sri Dhammadhassi Ratanapala Buddharakkithabidhana Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha, Mahanayake of Asgiri Chapter of Siyam Nikaya on May 15th which is Vesak full moon day.

This Vahalkada has been constructed by Mahinda Galappaththi of Navam Group of Companies in Colombo, under the guidance of incumbent of Kirivehera Raja Maha Vihara and Chief Sanghanayake of Ruhunu Magam Pattuwa, Ven. Dr. Aluthwewe Soratha Thera.

On behalf of this opening there will be a whole night Pirith chanting on 14th followed by a Dhamma desana by Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka from 7.20 to 8.30 a.m. on 15th and a lecture by Professor S. B. Hettiarachchi on "The Buddhist monk and the layman".

The devotees of Kirivehera who supply alms to Kirivehera will be rewarded with 1,000 white sarongs and 1,000 white sarees by Ven. Dr. Aluthwewe Soratha sponsored by Indra Kumara de Silva, proprietor of Indra Traders Limited. 500 spectacles will be distributed among the residents and an eye clinic will be held by a group of doctors headed by Dr. D. Y. Saranathilake.

More than 100 Bhikkus will be offered day time alms and Kataragama police will conduct an almsgiving (Dansal) in front of Kirivehera.

The Aloka Pooja will be offered by Swarna Amaratunge family of Rosmead Place, Colombo. This religious programme of Vesak day is organised by the Minister of Social Welfare, Ravindra Samaraweera, Deputy Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Jayasundara Wijekoon, Chairman of Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha, Asoka Wickremasinghe, Basnayake Nilame of Kataragama Maha Devale, Nilanga Dela Bandara, Chief Kapumahattaya of Kataragama Maha Devalaya Somipala Ratnayake and the Kirivehera Dayaka Sabha.
