by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The Government Press was re-opened yesterday after its sudden closure following Friday night's incidents. Several clashes occurred and damage caused to vehicles in the premises of the Government Press where the printing of a Gazette notification was to be done of the President's take over of the Development Lotteries Board (DLB). The building at Borella was still under tight security yesterday to prevent further incidents. The gates of the Government Press were opened at 8.25 am yesterday. The Government Printer Neville Nanayakkara told the Daily News yesterday that although the workers had turned up for work yesterday, the press was not working to its maximum capacity since several trade unionists refused to work over what they alleged to be a Police delay to arrive at the scene of Friday night's fracas. He also said the printing of the DLB Gazette notification has been cancelled due to the crisis situation and he had already requested legal advice from the Attorney General's Department regarding the issue. Meanwhile the Colombo DIG Bodhi Liyanage yesterday told the Daily News that investigations are currently on to ascertain the presence of the PA MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra at the premises at the time the Police arrived on the scene. They will also inquire into the charges made by the MP that he was forcibly removed from the premises by the police. The DIG also said that the Baseline Road was reopened for traffic on Sunday afternoon at 4.00 pm. |
