Professionals must rally behind Govt. development projects - Minister Senaratne

by Ananda Kannangara

Among a large number of development programmes the Government initiated in the recent past "Regaining Sri Lanka" and "e-Sri Lanka" could be regarded as two of the major projects commenced in order to achieve a speedy development, Lands Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratna said.

He made these observations at the inaugural meeting of Royal Institute of Charted Surveyors Sri Lanka branch held in Colombo recently.

The Minister called on all professionals in the country to participate actively to fulfil the Government's objective of developing the country and improve its economy.

The Minister said that he was very happy to address a forum of professionals representing the fields of land, property and construction since a large scale participation of them is vital to achieve the Government's development target.

"Your institution is the first of its kind to be established in Asia and I must congratulate the members for achieving a unique success surpassing other neighbouring countries with bigger memberships," he said.

Senaratne said that he personally believes the RICS can be developed into a centre of activities in this region for their respective professions and they will proceed with same dedication that they have displayed so far.

"Throughout history, professionals such as land surveyors, quantity surveyors and Valuers have made invaluable contribution to build a better world for the mankind and even today they are very dynamically engaged in this process," he said.

Senaratna highlighted the importance of implementing two very important projects such as the Title Registration in place of the deed registration system which is practised currently and also the establishment of a Land Information System which needs the new technology and a professional staff to carry out activities at international standards.

The Minister also requested the members of RICS Sri Lanka to concentrate their efforts towards the goal of development for the common good of the country as well as for the betterment of their profession.

Surveyor General Ranasinghe Silva also spoke.
