Colombo Port transshipment volumes up by 24%

The Port of Colombo which has emerged as the gateway to South Asia has handled 327,422 TEUs of transshipment containers during the 1st quarter of 2003 as against the volume of 265,029 TEUs of transshipment containers handled in the 1st quarter of 2002, there by recording a growth of 24%. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority(SLPA) sources said

The total container throughput handled during the 1st quarter was 468,129 TEUs signifying a growth of 18% as against the total container throughput of 398,104 TEUs handled in 2002. During the 1st quarter Port of Colombo has handled 962 vessels as against the 865 vessels handled in 2002, there by recording a growth of 11%.

The total cargo throughput handled during the 1st quarter was 6,723,937 Tons signifying a growth of 14% as against the 5,903,595 Tons handled in 2002.

The surge in volumes at the Port of Colombo is attributed to the productivity enhancement measures combined with the aggressive marketing approach adopted by the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT) providing world class facilities.

In a bid to boost its image as the pre-eminent load center (hub) of South Asia on the advice of Minister of Port Development, Shipping, Eastern Development & Muslim Religious Affairs, Rauff Hakeem, Chairman, SLPA, Parakrama Dissanayake has laun ched a major program to enhance productivity at JCT, the flagship terminal of the Port of Colombo.
