Isipatana-Thomian rugby match revived

by Chris Dhambarage

Two leading schools Isipatana and S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia have revived their inter school rugby encounter after a lapse of five years.

This game will now be worked off on June 28 at the CR and FC grounds in Longden Place. This match is of great importance for both teams because they will be competing for the prestigious Milo 'A' division league tournament. Isipatana and S. Thomas' have figured in some of the fascinating contests in the past but unfortunately the fixture was not held for the past five years.

The last occasion the two teams met in a fixture was in 1998 where Isipatana emerged victorious after a gruelling battle over their arch rivals at the Sugathadasa Stadium. Now that this game is labelled as a Milo 'A' division league tournament fixture there will be a great amount of interest and probably a make or break situation for both sides.

Isipatana are determined to prove themselves after they were deprived of the Milo 'A' division league title last year due to a technical error. This also led to a controversy in the schools rugby scene which resulted in Isipatana pulling out of the President's Trophy knock out tournament.

The Thomians on the other hand experienced mixed fortunes last year and will be looking forward to an improved performance in this years tournament which is conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Limited. The Thomians of course will open their new season with a match against St. Joseph's on May 23 at Havelock Park followed by a game against Ananda on May 26 in Colombo.

Isipatana will make their first appearance on May 30 with a friendly game against D. S. Senanayake College at Havelock Park before getting into real business with a tournament match against St. Anthony's College on June 7 at Havelock Park.
