President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has sent a congratulatory message to Prof. Malik Peiris, a Sri Lankan scientist, who led the first medical team to isolate the SARS virus. The President says that the international acclaim he has earned with this significant discovery in health science has done Sri Lanka proud. Prof. Peiris graduated from the University of Ceylon in 1972. In 1995 he joined the University of Hong Kong and has been there since. The President commended Prof. Peiris's decision not claim a proprietary stake in the discovery. Soon after the landmark discovery Prof. Malik Peiris is known to have said "In collaboration with my other colleagues in the Faculty of Science, of the University of Hong Kong, we cracked the genetic code of the SARS virus and completely sequenced the whole virus genome". |
