Western Province under 15 rugby pre-quarter-finals today

The pre-quarter finals of the Western Province under 15, 12 a side rugby tournament conducted by the Western Province Rugby Football Association will be worked off at the Thurstan College grounds, today.

Wesley College will confront Nalanda in the opening fixture of the Cup championship which is scheduled for 8.30 a.m followed by the clash between S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia and Mahanama MV. But the surprise inclusions in the pre-quarter final line up are Carey College, Piliyandala Central and Prince of Wales College Moratuwa.

The Careyites had the credit of defeating the more fancied Lumbini MV team 12-5 in a group match while Piliyandala Central held the strong St. Peter's team to a 5 all draw. Carey will take on Science College and Piliyandala Central will be up against Zahira College.

In addition St. Joseph's will meet Isipatana. St. Peter's will play against St. Benedict's and D. S. Senanayake will take on Royal in the remaining pre-quarter final matches.

Earlier in the preliminary round Royal and Isipatana excelled while recording two big victories against newcomers Siri Piyaratne MV. Royal emerged victorious in that match 70 nil while Isipatana pulled off a 70-14 win against the same opposition. However the clash between Royal and Isipatana ended in a thrilling 5 all draw.

In the pre-quarter finals Royal will take on D. S. Senanayake and Isipatana will be up against St. Joseph's. The last quarter-final will be between St. Peter's and St. Benedict's College Kotahena. The teams losing in the pre-quarter finals will join Lumbini MV, St. John's Nugegoda, Dudley Senanayake MV and S. Thomas' Prep in the Bowl championship.

The semifinals and the final will be worked off on Sunday at Thurstan College grounds. Meanwhile in the Western Province under 17, 15 a side tournament Wesley College defeated Science College 20-3. In addition there were walk overs for D. S. Senanayake, S. Thomas', Asoka MV, Nalanda, Zahira, St. Joseph's and Isipatana in the first round tournament.

Meanwhile the Western Province Rugby Football Association is hoping to form a coaches society in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association and the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union.
